Your PC is not a safety deposit box. It’s not a safe. It isn’t even a strongbox with a sturdy padlock. It is a fragile piece of equipment that you trust with personal data, financial information, and the centerpiece of your new home entertainment center. At no point in computer history has it been so important to back up your data than it is right now. Here are a few suggestions on how, when, and where to back up your computer’s hard drives.

This is all well and good, but how do you know what you should back up? That answer is simple. Anything that did not come with your computer or anything that you personally have produced should be backed up.

This includes any songs, movies, or other media that you have purchased and downloaded, any programs that did not come on a CD or DVD, and especially anything that you have written, drawn, programmed, or otherwise created and stored on your computer. In short, everything that you feel is worth keeping due to the time and effort you spent putting it on that hard drive.

The unreliability of electronic media cannot be stressed more. The materials biodegrade just like paper if not stored in a proper location. The data can become corrupted if not backed up and protected. And the data may not be useful if the backup took place on a media that is defunct and you have no means of retrieving it.

The novels, movies, family photo albums, memories, business deals, bank transactions, and any number of other things you use your PC to keep up with all these years are the most important things you can ever put on a PC. Take care of them. Keep them for as long as you might need them. Most importantly, protect them.
Tips

1) Use automated backup programs and back up regularly. Various programs and hardware devices from different vendors can help you accomplish this. Do your research, find the piece that’s right for you, and use it.

2) Keep multiple copies in various locations. This might seem a little like overkill, but remember that fires, floods, and other natural disasters have no passion and no care for anything that is important to you. Keeping copies offsite is a way of ensuring your critical data remains intact.

3) Destroy old backups. This can be done as simply as copying over old data with new (if you are using hard drives), or physically destroying the media if you used CDs or DVDs. This is simply a good habit to get into to avoid unwanted eyes seeing your information and ensuring you have the most updated backups available without confusion.

4) Test backups as often as you perform them. A backup untried is not a backup at all. There are no guarantees. You must test your data and verify that the data you stored is the data that will be restored if the time comes.
